"Optimization of disaster forecasting and prevention measures in the context of human and social dynamics" Workshop
The National Agency for Regulation on Nuclear and Radiological Activities of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Moldova, in collaboration with the Service of the Civil protection and Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, Moldova, organized an “Optimization of disaster forecasting and prevention measures in the context of human and social dynamics” workshop on April 7-10, 2008.
The workshop goal was to share the theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in the area of forecasting and prevention of the natural disasters with the aim of developing practical recommendations.
The workshop consisted of up to 30 presentations, including subsequent discussions, covering a wide range of disaster management regimes, with contributions made from ten countries. The topics addressed at this event covered a series of typical scenarios relating to both natural and man-made disasters, and their effects on both human and natural environments.
The participants focused on the integrated techniques for predicting, measuring and assessing various physical, environmental, health and social risks, and on how these risks could be best mitigated, and where possible prevented.
The workshop recognized the complexity of the interrelationship between several of the key factors that must be involved, to varying degrees of sophistication, in the overall management of the range of hazards and their associated risks. These factors include: monitoring; risk and other modeling; control measures (such as licensing); public liaison and information management (including education); and cost-benefit assessments.
The presentations, conclusions and recommendations of the workshop will be published in the workshop proceedings.
