Republic of Armenia

Details:

Armenia, officially Republic of Armenia, is a landlocked mountainous country in Eurasia in the South Caucasus. It borders Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan to the south. A former republic of the Soviet Union, Armenia is now constitutionally an independent state, being a member of more than 40 different international organizations, including the UN, the Council of Europe, the Asian Development Bank, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the World Trade Organization and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation. Armenia is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization military alliance and participates in NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme as well. It is also an observer member of the Eurasian Economic Community, La Francophone, and the Non-Aligned Movement. The country is an emerging democracy and, because of its strategic location, lies within both the Russian and Western spheres of interest. Armenia remains involved in the military conflict with neighbouring Azerbaijan over the Mountainous Karabakh region: by May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan’s territory outside the former “Nagorno [Mountainous] Karabakh Autonomous Oblast”.

Date when the country joined PfP : signed the Framework Document in 1994 becoming a member country of PfP initiative.
